Why this app matters

New: Background updates

Switch it on, head out, get warned

Switch on background updates once in the settings — then forget about it. Your warnings follow your current location automatically, without ever opening the app.

Optional and off by default, switch it off anytime. For iPhone and Android, battery-friendly.

New: Poison bait report

Report poison bait finds & warn others nearby

Report poison bait finds and warn other dog and cat owners nearby. Reports stay visible for several days and users in the vicinity automatically receive a warning.

New: Oak processionary moth

Report oak processionary moth & warn others about toxic stinging hairs

Report active caterpillars or old nests of the oak processionary moth and warn others about the toxic stinging hairs that can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Reports stay visible for a long time – active caterpillars 90 days, old nests up to a year.

In the “Warnings” tab, pick the oak processionary moth and choose the hazard level – done. Others nearby see the warning on the map right away.

New: Hedgehog Monitoring

Report hedgehog sightings & track them on the map

The hedgehog has been on the Red List of endangered species since 2024. Report hedgehog observations directly in the app — whether alive, injured or dead. All hedgehog sightings are collected and visualised on an interactive map.

A detailed evaluation of all hedgehog reports can be found on a separate page.

New: ASF early warning

Report dead-found wild boar — help with ASF early warning

African swine fever (ASF) is spreading in Germany and is deadly for wild and domestic pigs. Wild boars found dead are an important early indicator: every reported carcass feeds a public early-warning system and helps residents and authorities react early and contain the spread. Other dead-animal finds can be marked the same way.

In the app, select the animal and mark it as "dead" — that's it. The sighting appears instantly on the map and supports a community-based early warning system.

Background

How the idea for the app was born

I'm a dog owner and walk my dog every day. One evening, I wanted to invite a friend to join me for a walk. Her response came instantly:

Better not — the wild boar are already out there.

She couldn't actually know that for sure. But many people share that worry — especially dog owners. That's when I asked myself:

What if you could see right away where wildlife was last spotted?

If walkers share their observations, others can instantly see:

  • where wildlife is currently active
  • which paths to avoid
  • where it's currently quiet

That's how the idea for the Wildtier-Sichtungen app was born. From the start, it was important to me: quick reporting, no registration, no complicated features.

The app has spread surprisingly fast — because so many people know the same problem.

Join in — every sighting counts.
